Skilled Lactation Supporter Representation and Compensation Meeting
Meeting Purpose
- Centering and respecting Black and Indigenous birth workers
- Holding a true “working meeting”, there are no observers, only participants
- Productivity and advancing the field
- Amplifying the voices of community-rooted lactation supporters who are committed to advancing their clinical skills
Who Should Participate in this Meeting?
Clinically skilled & community rooted lactation care providers who directly serve families and are committed to advancing practice, through an explicitly anti-racist lens. Note, there is no credential requirement for participation in this meeting.
Meeting Objectives
- Sharing/getting on the same page regarding pathways to clinical support – including opportunities and barriers – and how we can each be supportive in our respective professional journeys
- Developing new pathways for clinical support that center Black and Indigenous birth workers and breastfeeding supporters
- Matching future skilled lactation supporters with potential mentors
- Developing personal action items and sharing them with the group
- Planning future collaboration and breastfeeding-supportive policy advocacy

Group Norms
All forms of communication are valid; please feel welcome to use the chat box if you do not feel like speaking
Camera use is welcome but not required
This is a BRAVE space
Listen from the inside out, or listen from the bottom up (a feeling in your gut matters)
W.A.I.T.–Why Am I Talking?
Make Space, Take Space
Confidentiality–take the lessons, leave the details
Be open to learning
Be open to someone else speaking your truth
Building, not selling–when you speak, converse, don’t pitch
Yes/and, both/and
Value the process as much as, if not more than, you value the outcomes
Microaggressions, white optics, and co-opting of ideas will be called out immediately by white facilitators during the call.
We address issues – especially white violence – as it happens in the meeting and discuss it on the next call.
Intellectual property that is shared on calls is shared for the purpose of informing folks of what is happening throughout Michigan. If you wish to implement something similar in your own community, it is expected you will consult with the person who shared their idea on the call.
Self care and community care–pay attention to your bladder, pay attention to your neighbors
**Please note that this meeting, including all the breakout rooms, will be recorded and notes will be transcribed for future reporting purposes.
