2020 August Breastfeeding Awareness Month
Welcome to August Breastfeeding Awareness Month! This is such an important time for breastfeeding supporters to highlight their successes throughout the year, and continue to advocate for necessary systemic changes to make breastfeeding possible and supported for Michigan families. MIBFN’s goal this year is to amplify local efforts around the state and continue to advocate for systemic support for breastfeeding. Please see below for breastfeeding awareness events throughout the month, and email hello@mibreastfeeding.org to share your local efforts.
August Breastfeeding Awareness 2020:
- World Breastfeeding Week (August 1-7): Support Breastfeeding for a Healthier Planet
- Native Breastfeeding Week (August 9-15): Strong. Resilient. Latched.
- Black Breastfeeding Week (August 25-31): Revive, Restore, Reclaim
- National Breastfeeding Month (August 1-31): Many Voices United
Governor’s Proclamation:
- Governor Whitmer has proclaimed August 2020 Breastfeeding Awareness Month

Events in Michigan:
- All month long: Berrien County Breastfeeding Coalition will post throughout the month to engage human milk advocates. Each time a person engages in a National Breastfeeding Month post, they will be entered to win a breastfeeding swag bag.
- All month long: Newaygo County Breastfeeding Coalition is highlighting moms on Facebook all month with “Brelfies” and highlighting a coalition member/breastfeeding supporter each week.
- All month long: Learn Lactate Grow will be hosting events and interactive daily photo challenges (#BreastfedInPontiac); Swag bags will be supplied to local providers and participants
- All month long: District Health Department #10 will be virtually celebrating on Facebook, featuring weekly breastfeeding peer counselor spotlights, engaging posts, weekly drawings for breastfeeding goodies, and at the end of the month, a drawing for a breastfeeding cooler full of lots of breastfeeding accessories, including the latest version of the Haakaa silicone breast pump, with the leakproof, removable cap.

- Swag bags will be supplied to local providers and participants
- Sunday, August 2nd at 8:00 pm EST: The Wonders of Mother’s Milk – Read by Lacretha via Facebook live with Milk Like Mine
- Monday, August 3rd to Friday, August 7th: Breastfeed Macomb World Breastfeeding Week Fun Fair
- Details will be shared on their Facebook pages: Breastfeed Macomb, Marvelous Milky Mamas, and The Marvelous Milky Mamas Collective.
- Each day a multiple choice breastfeeding trivia question will be posted with a gift basket associated.
- Eligible participants (pregnant or breastfeeding families living in Macomb County) can enter for a chance to win the gift basket during the allotted time by writing their answers in the comments.
- All participants with correct answers will have their names entered into the “wheel of names” and a winner will be selected by random.
- The winner will pick up the gift basket via curbside at the local WIC office – the Verkuilen Building in Clinton Township.
- Monday, August 3rd: YOLO Breastfeeding Week #BBBmilksupport Event – post a picture with someone who has supported your breastfeeding journey with #BBBmilksupport on Monday, August 3rd
- Monday, August 3rd from 10:00 am to 5:00pm EST: Community Baby Shower for Greater Ottawa County
- Tuesday August 4th 4:00 pm EST: “The Wonders of Mother’s Milk” – read by Jesse via Facebook live with Milk Like Mine
- Wednesday, August 5th at 1:00 pm EST: Newaygo County Breastfeeding Coalition is hosting their first-ever Virtual Support Group
- Wednesday, August 5th at 1:30 pm EST: Black Mothers’ Breastfeeding Association Virtual Community Conversation
- Wednesday, August 5th from 4:30 pm – 6:30 pm EST: Urban League of Detroit WIC Express Yourself Breastfeeding Club Virtual Celebration To sign up, text 313-831-5135
- Monday, August 17th: Oakland County Bridging the Breastfeeding Gap – Our Stories (please note: this is an ongoing event where stories are being collected until July 31st and will be published starting August 17th – click here to view the event flyer)
- Tuesday, August 25th: Launch of the Your goodVillage Espresso Milk Collective – Black Breastfeeding Support Group (click here to view the flyer)
- Those interested in participating are asked to pre-register here – click on “Black Breastfeeding Group.”
- This will be a virtual group until it is safe to meet in-person.
